Financial Assistance Grants

Direct grants that help service members and their families cover unexpected expenses and keep moving forward.

Smiling individuals engage happily in a social setting, reflecting community support and connection related to financial assistance.

Support that Meets a Sudden Hardship

The Financial Assistance Grants program is run by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and funded by the VFW Foundation. It provides direct grants to active-duty service members and military families when an unexpected hardship, such as a deployment, an injury, or a sudden loss of income, threatens the basics. For a family, that can mean staying in their home, keeping the car running, or putting food on the table while they steady their footing.

For Service Members and their Families.

Active-duty service members, including activated Guard and Reserve members, and their families qualify when they face unexpected hardships tied to deployment, military activity, injury, or other financial stress. To apply, you provide proof of your military status and the hardship, then submit a request through the VFW. Each request is reviewed individually.

Grants cover the everyday essentials, including:

  • Rent or mortgage
  • Utilities
  • Vehicle expenses
  • Childcare
  • Food
  • Other daily necessities

A Grant Kept Patrick Moving Forward

    Patrick Byrne

Patrick Byrne served nine years in the Army, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After a layoff in Greensboro, North Carolina, a grant covered his car payment so he could keep getting to job interviews.

Retail brands and corporate supporters can fund grants nationwide, turning local generosity into measurable impact for military families.
