Back to Youth & Education Educational Outreach

VFW members bring veteran stories and civic education into classrooms, one community at a time.

Educational Outreach is part of Youth & Education, one of the impact areas funded by National Program Supporters.

Bring Veteran History and Civic Education Into the Classroom

Educational Outreach is a category of community-driven programs through which VFW posts and members take veteran history and civic education directly into U.S. classrooms. These aren’t centrally produced campaigns; they are locally executed, Post by Post, in schools and communities across all 50 states. The VFW Foundation supports the infrastructure and resources that make that local reach possible at national scale.

Echoes From the Wall

Developed in collaboration with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Echoes From the Wall brings the human story behind the Memorial into high school classrooms. The curriculum has been distributed to 25,000 U.S. public and private high schools, backed by a $50,000 VFW investment in the project. For students with no living connection to the Vietnam era, it closes a gap that no textbook alone can.

Veterans in the Classroom

Every November, VFW officially designates the month as Veterans in the Classroom Month. VFW members visit local schools to demonstrate proper flag etiquette and share firsthand wartime experiences with students. It’s direct, personal, and impossible to replicate with a worksheet.

Educational Brochures

The VFW produces and distributes a flag brochure and poster for classroom and community use. These are practical resources that give teachers and posts a starting point for flag etiquette education and civic conversation.
